"Mr. President, Pull My Finger," or "Mr. Shrub," as it's come to be known, was actually inspired by Italian-born sculptor Benny Bufano, who protested World War I by severing his finger and sending it to President Woodrow Wilson. Bufano was fired from the San Francisco Institute of Art in 1923 for not having enough fingers.

OK, that's not true. He was actually fired for being too radical (which blows the myth of artists and San Franciscans being liberal!).

Henry Miller wrote of Bufano, "He will outlive our civilization and probably be better known, better understood, both as a man and artist, five thousand years hence."

(Which might've been true if they hadn't removed Bufano's most famous piece – called "Peace"– to make room for a parking garage at the San Francisco airport.) The concept of rednecks being anti-war may seem contradictory to some folks who aren't as well-steeped in redneck culture as Eddie Glenn.

But in fact, it's no more contradictory that Latinos against war, or Blacks against war. War kills the poor, but benefits them very little. Plus, why send healthy young men off to shoot at people they don't even know, when there are plenty of people right here in the backwoods of Oklahoma that need shooting just as bad!

"Mr. Shrub" was recorded in about half an hour at Cimarron Sound Lab in Tahlequah, with Eddie singing both lead and harmony (if you could call it that) and playing what few instruments are on it (acoustic and electric rhythm guitars, lead guitar, and bass). Engineering and mixing was done by Jeff Parker. The animation/video was thrown together by K McCay in a moment of sleep deprived inspiration.
